Salvador Dalí – Divine Comedy (L’Enfer, Chant III)
An original limited edition etching from Dalí’s monumental Divine Comedy series, depicting Charon and the crossing of Acheron—one of the most iconic threshold scenes in Dante’s Inferno. Includes an AuthenticDali Authentication Report.
Artwork title: Charon et le passage de l’Achéron (French) / Charon and the Crossing of Acheron (English)
Chant III contains the famous inscription above the Gate of Hell and culminates in the terrifying passage across the river Acheron. Charon’s boat marks the point of no return. Dalí captures the psychological intensity of this crossing with refined etched line, turning Dante’s spiritual threshold into a mythic, irreversible transition.
Art Historical Context
Salvador Dalí’s illustrations for Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy form one of the most ambitious graphic projects of the twentieth century, comprising 100 images across Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso.
In L’Enfer, Chant III, Dante and Virgil pass through the Gate of Hell and approach the river Acheron, where the infernal boatman Charon gathers the souls of the dead. The crossing introduces a new reality: once the boat leaves the shore, the descent becomes inevitable.
Dalí’s etching emphasizes motion, pressure, and psychological inevitability. The scene reads as both narrative and metaphor: a passage from hesitation to consequence, from the world of the living to the moral architecture of the Inferno.
