Salvador Dalí – Divine Comedy (L’Enfer, Chant VIII)
An original limited edition woodcut from Dalí’s Divine Comedy series, depicting the crossing of the marsh of Styx and the approach to the City of Dis. Includes a detailed Authentication Report.
Chant VIII introduces the violent fury of the wrathful and marks the first confrontation with the walls of Dis. Dalí’s use of the woodcut medium intensifies the brutality of the scene, lending the composition a raw, archaic force well suited to the chaos and aggression of the Styx.
Art Historical Context
Salvador Dalí’s complete illustration of Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy stands among the most ambitious graphic projects of the twentieth century. The cycle consists of 100 images across Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso, executed using multiple print techniques.
In L’Enfer, Chant VIII, Dante and Virgil cross the marsh of Styx aboard the boat of Phlegyas. The wrathful fight endlessly in the blackened waters, while the sullen gurgle beneath the surface. Dante encounters Filippo Argenti, whose violent rage becomes part of the punishment itself. The canto concludes with the looming arrival at the gates of Dis.
Dalí’s decision to render this scene as a woodcut reinforces its severity. The bold contrasts, carved lines, and reduced tonal subtlety of the medium echo medieval print traditions, enhancing the sense of primordial violence and moral collapse.
